State health officials are warning consumers to throw away ready-to-eat sandwiches sold by two grocery chains in Eastern Massachusetts because they might be contaminated by bacteria.
"Roller Sandwiches" made by World Class Canapes of Wilmington and sold by 18 Roche Bros. and Sudbury Farms stores have been recalled because they could contain the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, according to the state Department of Public Health. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis infections, but the elderly, newborns, and others with weakened immune systems can be vulnerable. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages.
The recalled sandwiches, intended for sale from July 31 through Aug. 2, were labeled "Progressive Gourmet Buffalo Chicken Roller Sandwich," "Progressive Gourmet Chicken Caesar Roller Sandwich," or "Progressive Gourmet Honey Turkey with Baby Spinach Roller Sandwich."
The contamination was discovered through microbiological sampling by the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, which has received no reports of illnesses connected to the sandwiches.
The Roche Bros. stores involved in the recall are in Acton, Bridgewater, Burlington, Easton, Marshfield, Mashpee, Millis, Natick, Needham, Norton, Quincy, Wellesley, West Roxbury, Westborough, and Westwood.
The Sudbury Farm stores are in Needham, Randolph, and Sudbury.![]()
