Another spin on thwarting bike thieves
A big problem with bicycle theft is that it tends not to get taken seriously. I noted in your article ("Thieves rack up bikes, locked or not," City Weekly, Aug. 31) that Somerville police are actually registering bicycle serial numbers.
A further step would be to have registration stickers coupled with a program such that any bike on the street sans sticker could be subject to being pulled over and checked. If the rider has proof of identity and the serial number is registered to his/her name, police could issue a sticker on the spot.
