CAMBRIDGE
The Mount Auburn Cemetery has appointed a new president and chief executive officer, cemetery officials announced yesterday. David P. Barnett, of Boxborough, was given the position after a nationwide, yearlong search. He has worked at the cemetery for more than 15 years and most recently served as the executive vice president and then acting president after the retirement of the last president, according to a statement from the cemetery officials. The 175-acre cemetery is across the Charles River from Boston. It is a National Historic Landmark.

SOMERVILLE
Police warn joggers, walkers after assault
Police are warning joggers and others walking in the Porter Square neighborhood to be on the alert after a woman was sexually assaulted in a pedestrian underpass earlier this month. During the evening of Sept. 10, the woman was jogging near the intersection of Sacramento and Beacon streets when she was attacked, according to Captain Paul Upton, police spokesman. Police alerted 3,000 Porter Square residents by telephone on Monday and are working with the Cambridge and Harvard University police because the assault was close to university buildings and the city line, he said. The suspect was described as a white male, about 6 feet tall, with light brown hair, wearing jeans and a baseball cap. He also was riding what police describe as an old bicycle. Anyone with information is asked to contact Somerville police at 617-625-1212.

A police officer responding to a call struck and injured a bicyclist at an intersection, police said. Witnesses said the officer was using his siren and had the green light when the rider came rapidly down a hill to the intersection of Ferry and Glendale streets. They said that the officer, after the crash, got help and comforted the bicycle rider. Mazzie said the accident is under investigation. (AP)

Governors, premiers adopt resolutions
Meeting in Maine yesterday, New England's governors and the premiers of Canada's eastern provinces adopted a resolution advocating transportation systems that help cut greenhouse gas emissions. The resolution at the 32d meeting of the state and provincial leaders calls for better coordination between environmental and transportation agencies and transportation systems. The leaders also agreed on a resolution acknowledging the importance of population growth to maintain an adequate labor force. Governor James Douglas of Vermont said employers have told him that is the most critical problem. The conference is being hosted by Governor John Baldacci of Maine and Premier Shawn Graham of New Brunswick. (AP)

Mosquitoes with encephalitis found
For the fourth time this summer, mosquitoes infected with Eastern equine encephalitis have been found in the Bay State, this time in Raynham, in the southeastern corner of Massachusetts, public health authorities reported yesterday. Earlier, insects carrying the virus, which kills up to half of the people who are infected, were discovered in Berkley, Carver, and Halifax. No human cases of Eastern equine encephalitis have been reported in Massachusetts since 2006. The Department of Public Health also reported that West Nile virus continues to be detected in mosquitoes and crows, although no people have been diagnosed with the virus.
