Though the idea of taking a yacht around Boston Harbor might seem like a luxury, at this year's First Night celebration it can become a reality.

For the first time, the event has teamed with Massachusetts Bay Lines to offer a harbor cruise to watch the fireworks display as 2008 ends and 2009 begins.

"Obviously, this is the best vantage point," said Joyce Linehan, spokeswoman for First Night. "This will be a really sought-after thing."

New Year's Eve harbor cruises can cost more than $100, though many include dinner for that price. But this excursion is included in the price of a First Night button, which for $18 provides entrance to all indoor events Wednesday, including displays at the Institute of Contemporary Art and the New England Aquarium.

Linehan cautions potential seadogs that the boat's capacity of 250 will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10 p.m. It is the only boat making the a trip for First Night, and once full it will set sail.

But if that doesn't work out, there is another way for guests to partake in maritime adventures.

Also a first this year, several boats, including an 87-foot Coast Guard cutter, will be tied up at the Moakley Federal Courthouse on the HarborWalk. The vessels will be open for tours from noon to 4 p.m., and Coast Guard crew members will be on hand to answer questions.

This is the 33d year for First Night, which typically draws more than 1 million people taking part in 200 events and exhibitions in 40 locations.

"It's so established now that parents who went to the event when they were kids are bringing their kids," Linehan said. "We have generations of families at the event."
