Flanagan on track for Boston games
Reigning Olympic bronze medalist and American record holder Shalane Flanagan will take part in her first track competition of the new year at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, to be held Feb. 7 at the Reggie Lewis Center.

The Marblehead native will make her professional indoor debut at 5,000 meters on the same running track where she set one of her three American records, 8:33.25 in the 3,000 meters in the 2007 Reebok meet.

Last year's highlights for Flanagan included a trip to the medal podium in Beijing, thanks to a gutsy third-place finish in the fastest Olympic 10,000-meter final ever.

Her time of 30:22.22 at the Summer Games bested her own American record, set earlier last year in Palo Alto, Calif.

At next month's competition in Boston, Flanagan is scheduled to face Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba, who won Olympic gold in Beijing in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races.

Football coaches to be feted at clinic
The Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association will host its annual coaching clinic tomorrow and Saturday at the Boston Marriott Quincy.

A number of area college head coaches will speak, including Sean McDonnell (New Hampshire), Rocky Hager (Northeastern), E.J. Mills (Amherst), and Jeff Devanney (Trinity), along with members of the Boston College football staff.

Harvard head coach Tim Murphy will serve as the breakfast speaker on Saturday morning.

John Bartlett (BC High), Jeff Moore (Dracut), Dave Maimarom (Duxbury) and Bill Maver (Acton-Boxborough Regional) headline the speakers from high school programs.

Four coaches will be honored for reaching 200 career wins: Dick Collins (Andover), Walter Dubzinski (Gardner), Ken Perrone (Salem) and Ernie Richards (Uxbridge).

Also, Henry Morris of Acton-Boxborough's Pop Warner program will receive the Youth Coach Award, and Tim Jordan (Westford Academy) and Kevin Papargiris (Attleboro) will be presented Varsity Gold Scholarships.

Trinity's Eramo wins league kudos
Trinity College freshman Adam Eramo, a Rowley native who graduated from St. John's Prep last spring, shared New England Small College Athletic Conference men's swimming and diving performer of the week honors for his showing in a tri-meet against Connecticut College and Wheaton on Saturday.

Eramo took first place in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.31), and finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 17:08.12.

He also registered a pair of firsts (500 and 1,000 freestyle) in a meet against Vassar.
