Former radio show host to hold forums on substance abuse

Lawrence E. Dugan Sr. used to dole out advice to recovering addicts on his popular radio show "Recovery Expressions," streamed live on WTCH-FM (106.1).
Now Dugan, a recovering addict himself, is putting what he preaches into practice. He has quit the show, but kept the name. In addition to offering advice, he and his team work with addicts, giving them a shoulder to lean on or a ride to treatment.
"I left the show because of the need to be closer to the community," he said.
On Wednesday, "Recovery Expressions" will hold the first in a series of forums dealing with substance abuse issues in these tough economic times.
Residents, community leaders, lawmakers, and professionals will speak, along with individuals in recovery and those still addicted.
"It is our hope to bring to the forefront the need to continue to effectively provide treatment for individuals who are caught in the grip of active addiction," he wrote in an e-mail. "It has been evident in the lives of numerous recovering addicts that treatment does work."
Dugan, who left the radio show a month ago, said he's aiming to use the forums to bring attention to the community about the dangers of drugs and the need for treatment.
He also wants to address residents' concerns as state programs face budget trims.
Dugan said he was moved to do more community outreach after hearing the concerns of listeners on his radio program.
"We are still reaching out," he said. "If a person needs treatment we take them to treatment. If they need counseling, we provide them with that."
The event, "The Horror of Crack Cocaine," will be held 6 to 8 p.m. at Vine Street Community Center, at 339 Dudley St. in Roxbury.
