The American Foundation for the Blind earlier this month awarded Representative Edward J. Markey, a Malden Democrat, the Migel Medal, the highest award in the field of blindness, for his work on improving technology access for people with disabilities.

Markey was honored for introducing the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act in June 2008. The legislation was designed to enhance access to broadband technology and services for persons with disabilities.

Senator Tom Harkin, an Iowa Democrat, also received the Migel Medal at the March 5 ceremony.

Since the medal was first awarded in 1937, only four other elected officials have received the honor.
