Upton's Chris Sandini (above), a junior pitcher on the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team, has set the school career record for strikeouts while emerging as one of the best pitchers in program history.

Before yesterday's scheduled start against Nichols, the Nipmuc Regional High graduate was 4-1 this spring with a 1.95 earned-run average, recording two shutouts and 54 strikeouts in 37 innings. He was limiting foes to a .213 batting average, and of the 29 base hits he had allowed, only four went for extra bases. In the Commonwealth Coast Conference, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound righty was 3-0 with an 0.90 ERA and was named the top pitcher for the week ending April 5.

"Chris is off to such a great start because of his ability to throw all his pitches for strikes and pitching ahead in the count," said head coach Steve Studley. "Because Chris is such a great competitor, every time he takes the mound for us we feel we are going to win."

Wentworth, 30-14 and a conference runner-up and ECAC semifinalist last spring, was 17-6-1 overall and 7-2-1 in conference play at midweek.

Daly breaks mark
Senior Emily Daly of Hopkinton shattered the Dartmouth College women's hammer throw record last weekend with a 59.34-meter (193 feet, 8 inches) effort at the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton University.

Daly, whose toss was 6 feet better than the old mark, also finished first in the event while qualifying for the NCAA Regionals.

"Emily can be really good when she puts her mind to it," said Dartmouth field events coach Carl Wallin. "Many athletes are afraid that they will fail, but not Emily. If she wants to be the best, she can be. "She has also improved in the shot put and 20-pound weight after training very hard last summer on her technique and strength."

Ginand scores 20
Milford's Ryan Ginand finished his college hockey career at Northeastern University in fine style, leading the Huskies into the NCAA Division 1 tournament with a team-best 20 goals and second-best 32 points. It was a vast improvement over his previous high totals of 10 goals and 10 assists as a junior. A second-team Hockey East selection, the 5-9, 175-pound Ginand helped NU go 25-12-4, tying the school record for victories.

"Ryan was a goal scorer who was also fearless in his pursuit of the puck and who had a built-in second effort around loose pucks," said Huskies head coach Greg Cronin. "I really enjoyed coaching him. He was a combination of natural excitement and unyielding confidence."

Quinn runs his best
Bates College sophomore Ryan Quinn, a former Watertown High track standout, was honored as the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Track Performer of the Week after posting personal bests in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and anchoring Bates' 4-by-100-meter relay team at the recent Snowflake Classic at Tufts University, where they took second place in the event.

Quinn was second in the 100 (11.19 seconds) and fourth in the 200 (22.71 seconds); his times put him at sixth and 10th, respectively, in the Bates outdoor track record book.

Odds and ends
Southborough's Matt Karis, a graduate of the Noble & Greenough School in Dedham, was recently named the Centennial Conference's Pitcher of the Week as a sophomore on the Gettysburg College baseball squad . . . Suffolk University senior Reid Jackson of Burlington, who attended Arlington Catholic High, allowed just two runs and seven hits to powerhouse Wheaton College in a 4-2 victory that ended Wheaton's 16-game winning streak . . . Framingham State College sophomore outfielder Steve Tramontozzi of Watertown had a home run to remember: a grand slam in the top of the seventh that made the difference in a 7-5 victory against Bridgewater State . . . Northeastern senior catcher Frank Pesanello of Plainville was one of four Huskies to crack a homer in a 16-5 victory over Harvard in the semifinals of the Baseball Beanpot. NU plays the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in Monday's final at Fenway at 5 p.m.
