AMESBURY
Police are investigating David and Terra Nardone of Windham, N.H., in connection with more than 20 complaints for illegal business practices at their used car dealership, Amesbury Auto Sales on Hillside Avenue. In a number of sales, Nardone allegedly did not hold title to the vehicles he sold. Some cars could not pass state inspection, and Nardone allegedly also took customers' money and trade-ins in exchange for cars when he had not yet paid the original owner. In addition, he allegedly sold the same cars to different customers. "We've been receiving complaints since March 10," said Amesbury police Lieutenant Mark Gagnon. Nardone's license was suspended by vote of the municipal board last Tuesday, and a public hearing has been scheduled for June 12, where Nardone will be able to appeal the suspension. In the meantime, the business has been shut down. Nardone had been operating under his wife's business license since he opened the dealership five months ago. - David CoggerESSEX
CLERK TO BE APPOINTED - By a 154-64 vote at the May 11 town election, residents approved a referendum that will make the town clerk's position appointed, not elected. The change is scheduled to take place with the retirement of longtime clerk Sally Soucy in 2010. In the lone contested race on the ballot, Wesley Burnham (141 votes) and incumbent Kim Drake (128) were elected to five-year terms on the Planning Board, with Kevin Street (101) finishing third. Running unopposed, Jeff Jones was reelected as a selectman and newcomer Gregory Carroll was elected to a spot on the Manchester Essex Regional School Committee. - David RattiganTYNGSBOROUGH
NEW BOARD MEMBERS - The Board of Selectmen welcomed newly elected members Elizabeth Coughlin and Robert Jackson at its Monday meeting. Coughlin has a history of service in town, as a former member of the Conservation Commission and the Sewer Department. Jackson is a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals as well as the Strategic Financial Planning Committee. Both were elected May 12. - Katheleen ContiNEW HAMPSHIRE

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Town Hall. - Tom LongNASHUA
HOUSING FOR VETERANS - A former furniture store on Factory Street is going to be transformed into housing for homeless veterans. Last week, the Board of Aldermen voted to commit $330,000 in federal affordable housing funds to the project. Harbor Homes, a support group for the homeless, intends to convert the 29,000-square-foot building that housed Avery Furniture into 40 apartments for veterans. Avery closed last fall after 120 years in business. - Tom Long© Copyright 2009 Globe Newspaper Company.
