In response to “Growing pains,’’ in the Sept. 6 Globe West, Route 2 is still a forgotten road. Current work is a mix of routine maintenance required on all roads, patches to make up for the fact that plans for real improvements were abandoned, and impediments to travel under the name “improvements.’’

Route 2 in Lincoln and Concord was supposed to be made into a limited-access highway 30 years ago. It was not. The consolation prize is, in a decade you might only wait at six red lights instead of seven plus a rotary.

Towns from Phillipston to Greenfield have been waiting 50 years for a four-lane road. MassHighway promised not to improve Route 2 in the next 50 years and planted plastic poles in the center of the two-lane road to ensure that you get stuck behind that slow car for a good, long time without being able to pass.

Recent administrations are proud of the fact that they hate roads and think anybody who drives a car ought to be stuck in a traffic jam.

Nothing has changed except an order from Washington to spend more money and put out more press releases.
