Acton resident Sunanda Sahay would like folk art to become more popular. She does her part by creating paintings using the colorful Madhubani style that is practiced in her home region of Mithila, India, and by holding demonstrations of the technique.

While Madhubani paintings typically are created as murals on the clay walls of village homes, Sahay paints on cloth while staying true to traditional themes of mythology and social customs.

She has additionally conducted workshops on the tribal art of Warli at the Peabody Essex Museum and Boston Children’s Museum.

Sahay conducted a free workshop in Madhubani painting for children yesterday at the Abbot Public Library in Marblehead.

An exhibition of her paintings, “Folk Colors of India,’’ is on display in the library’s Virginia A. Carten Gallery through Oct. 27.

Next month, her work will be exhibited at the Center for Arts in Natick.
