National Grid properties in Everett, Haverhill, and Revere are among five locations where the state Department of Public Utilities has approved solar photovoltaic power facilities.

All five projects are expected to generate 5 megawatts of electricity (the equivalent of powering about 1,000 homes for one year) once they are fully operational by the end of 2010.

“It’s a small percentage of total demand in Massachusetts, but it’s an excellent starting point,’’ said David Graves, a spokesman for National Grid.

Site work will begin at some locations this fall while the solar panels are expected to be installed next year, Graves said.

The facilities, projected to cost $3.9 million to $5.8 million each, will be built on sites of former manufactured gas plants on Rover Street in Everett; Hilldale Avenue in Haverhill; and Railroad Street in Revere, he said.

The increase on an average residential bill is expected to be 11 cents per month initially, dropping to 5-6 cents per month over time, said Lisa Capone, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Utilities.

National Grid also received approval to construct solar plants in Dorchester and on the Sutton/Northbridge border.
