Marketing in new media is forum’s focus
The South Shore Women’s Business Network, a 300-member group, will hold a daylong seminar Thursday on using new media, called “Join the Communication Revolution.’’

New media is a broad term that includes social networks like Facebook and Twitter but also encompasses online marketing techniques such as better use of websites, search engines, and videos. The seminar is designed to help businesses take advantage of new media marketing techniques.
“We needed to prepare this program to pertain to the small business members, the mom-and-pop businesses, and the big ones like Rockland Trust and Citizens Bank,’’ said Katie Howard, the network’s director of operations. “We have been researching areas which small businesses really need to learn about.’’
The event’s keynote speaker is Brian Halligan, chief executive of the Internet marketing company HubSpot and author of the book “Inbound Marketing: Get Found Using Google, Social Media, and Blogs.’’
While businesses have traditionally sought new ways to find customers, Halligan says customers are also looking to find services and products. “The idea is to position your own business so that consumers can find you,’’ said network member Jennifer Logue of Quincy.
The seminar, to be held at the Lantana in Randolph, will offer a series of workshops by independent business owners with practical strategies to offer. The sessions include:
■ A discussion on how businesses are using new media to “create visibility, strengthen brand identity, drive Web traffic, and improve customer relations’’ by Angela Rutzick of A-Type Marketing and Design.
■ “Creating Your Network,’’ by Paula Harris of Duxbury and WH Cornerstone Investments.
■ Specific examples and instructions for creating and maximizing social networking pages from Susan LaPlante-Dube of Precision Marketing Group.
■ Abington resident Joe Costantino of Business Marketing Success will discuss strategic versus tactical marketing and offer tips for determining a business’s competitive advantage.
Logue, an independent communications professional, said South Shore Business Network events help new businesses get started and young job seekers make introductions.
