A group of 15 students from Mexico will be coming to Salem this summer to take part in Salem State University’s English as a Second Language summer program. The students, from a university in Chiapas, are preparing to become English teachers in that region of southern Mexico. The Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas was able to send the students as a result of a grant from the Mexican Ministry of Education. The initiative was the result of collaboration between Salem State’s Center for International Education and Fatima Serra, a Salem State foreign language department instructor and study abroad adviser. State officials said they are hopeful that this summer’s exchange could lead to additional collaboration between the universities in the future. —John Laidler ![]()
