Catherine’s Craft Fair, an annual event that started in 2000 to benefit the Aplastic Anemia Myelodysplasia International Foundation, returns Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Winthrop School, 325 Bay Road. The event was inspired by Catherine MacLean, who was 4 1/2 when she was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. The rare bone-marrow disorder leaves the individual at risk for severe infections, disease, and life-threatening bleeding. Catherine’s immune system was able to accept a bone-marrow transfusion from her younger brother, and she is now a nine-year survivor. During her long hours in the hospital and at home recuperating, Catherine spent the time making crafts and small items for her friends and family. Catherine began the craft fair at age 8 to help those less fortunate. The fair has gone on to donate more than $15,000 to the foundation, which helps patients worldwide.
