After years of litigation to overturn the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen’s decision to reject his application for a used-car dealer’s license, Matt Grenier won his case in the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on Monday.

Grenier, a Shrewsbury resident, applied for a license in 2007, saying he would sell his vintage cars on the Internet rather than from a street lot.

Selectmen said the town had limited the licenses they would grant at 20, and would not add more because they would have no way of observing and regulating his business.

The SJC ruled that the limit lacked standards and, therefore, the selectmen’s decision was arbitrary.

Grenier said he intends to obtain a license and begin selling cars as soon as possible.
