Controlled Demolition Inc. will knock down the six-story Addison-Wesley building at 1 Jacob Way off South Street at 9 a.m. Saturday. The company will be using a small amount of explosives, which will cause the building to implode. In advance of the demolition, the company will conduct a test blast on one building column. To ensure the public’s safety, access to the Jacob Way site will be restricted. Police also will stop traffic on Route 128, and Main, South, Curtis, and George streets starting about 10 minutes before the demolition. While residents of South and Curtis streets are at a safe distance from the demolition, police and fire officials are asking all residents to stay inside their homes and keep their doors and windows closed to prevent any dust from affecting their properties. The contractor will be videotaping the demolition and the recording will air on Reading cable television; due to the location of the building being demolished and the site conditions, there is no good vantage point for residents to watch the demolition in person.
