Brookline restaurant and retail business continues to buck economic trends, with an increase in the number of occupied storefronts and a vacancy rate of 5.9 percent compared with an average for the area of 6.7 percent. And, according to a report provided the selectmen by Marge Amster, commercial areas coordinator, many empty storefronts are already leased. The percentage of restaurants (24.2 percent) and chain stores (23.7 percent) has also increased slightly, Amster said, but Brookline continues to be a destination for independent stores.
