Arthur Vigeant was elected as the city’s next mayor Tuesday, after a hotly contested campaign that was decided by a margin of 42 votes in the initial count. Vigeant, who has been serving as the City Council’s president, defeated political newcomer Matthew Jones in the contest to replace incumbent Nancy Stevens, who opted against running for reelection after three two-year terms as mayor. Vigeant ran on his experience in government, pointing to the city’s financial health under his council presidency. Jones, a lawyer in his first bid for elected office, built considerable support with a platform citing job creation, education, and fixes to ongoing problems at the Fire Department. According to unofficial results from the city, Vigeant garnered 2,996 votes while Jones received 2,954. - Dan Adams
