The city is holding its first clothing and household textile recycling drive from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Riley Plaza, in front of the Post Office. It is being organized by Salem Recycles, an all-volunteer city committee. The collection may be the first event for household textiles and clothing in the region, according to the committee. Items that can be dropped off include sneakers, shoes, boots, slippers, belts, and ties; purses; pillows; bedding items, such as comforters, sheets, and blankets; table linens; stuffed animals; drapes or curtains; and rags. The items can be in almost any condition, but they must be clean and dry. No carpets, rugs, bric-a-brac, oil rags, or wet or mildewed items will be accepted. For details, call 978-619-5679. - John Laidler
