Management plan adopted
Selectmen have adopted a harbor management plan, one that has been in the making for two years with the guidance of the Mattapoisett Marine Advisory Board and public input. Among other things, the plan determines areas to be used for purposes other than marine recreation, which includes shellfish farming, and deals with navigational issues and expansion of mooring fields. Before adopting the plan, selectmen amended the 1-fathom rule, which would have limited aquaculture to waters 6 feet or deeper at mean high tide. With the amendment, anyone seeking an aquaculture license will have to adhere to the 1-fathom rule unless they can prove the species they wish to grow must be cultivated in shallower waters.
