Councilor at Large Stephen N. Zanni will be Methuen’s mayor in January after a recount Tuesday confirmed his victory over Al DiNuccio on Nov. 8.

In the final tally, Zanni won by 34 votes, 4,450 to 4,416. Zanni had emerged the winner on election night by 28 votes, a margin adjusted to 26 votes when provisional and hand-counted ballots were included, said city clerk Christine Touma-Conway.

In the recount, Zanni picked up a net eight votes, giving him a final victory margin of 34 votes.

DiNuccio, a business owner, said “We congratulate the new mayor and and wish him nothing but the best. Our prayers and best wishes are with him.”

Zanni, a retired school administrator, will succeed Mayor William M. Manzi.
