Firefighter Brandon Smith was honored by the Holbrook Fire Department and Board of Selectmen recently for aiding an Abington man while off-duty. Smith and a friend, Hanson firefighter Jared Murphy, were riding in a vehicle in Abington when they saw a man collapse on Plymouth Street. They stopped, called 911, and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Holbrook Fire Chief Edward J. O’Brien said Smith did not seek recognition, keeping quiet about his actions until O’Brien learned about the event through a letter from Abington Fire Chief John M. Nuttall. Nuttall said Smith had assisted Abington police in using a defibrillator. “If it were not for your actions, the chances of survival for this Abington resident would have been small,” Nuttall wrote. O’Brien presented Smith with a certificate of commendation. - Jennette Barnes
