Obama campaign to extend faith outreach

Barack Obama's director of religious affairs, Joshua DuBois (at left, with Obama), and his evangelical outreach coordinator, Wesley Theological Seminary Professor Shaun Casey, made an unexpected appearance at the Religion Newswriters Association convention late yesterday. They apparently wanted to respond to remarks made at the conference by Amy Sullivan of Time magazine suggesting that the Obama campaign was cutting back on its faith outreach efforts, as well as to polling by John C. Green of the University of Akron suggesting that the evangelical outreach was not paying dividends for Democrats.

DuBois, who studied at Boston University and was a leader in a tiny church in Cambridge, said any suggestion that Obama is cutting back resources for faith outreach is "just not true'' and said "our efforts are increasing, not decreasing.'' DuBois said the campaign now includes people devoted to outreach not only to evangelicals, but also to outreach to Catholics and to Muslims and to Jews. And he said that over the next few weeks, the campaign is launching a "faith, family and values tour,'' which will consist of surrogates holding town hall forums in key battleground states.

"What we don't do is try to coopt houses of worship,'' he said. "Our focus is on folks who have Senator Obama's values.''

DuBois said the campaign does not view single-issue voters, especially those concerned primarily with abortion and with same-sex marriage, as among its "persuadables.'' But, he said, there are many moderate evangelicals with broader sets of priorities, as well as Catholics and mainline Protestants, who remain up for grabs. He said the campaign has been making surrogates available to Christian radio stations, holding conference calls with religious leaders, and hosting house parties as part of its outreach. He called the effort "the most robust religious outreach effort of any Democratic candidate in electoral history.''

"The broad brush of evangelical polling is something we don't pay a huge amount of attention to,'' he said.

Casey said he has been spending his time speaking at Christian colleges and in rural communities in Virginia and Indiana, and said, "we are seeing receptivity among young evangelicals.''

  1. As noted, the Obama campaign has announced that, beginning the week of September 22, a team of Obama surrogates (including Pepperdine University law school Prof. Douglas Kmiec, evangelical author Donald Miller, and former Congressman Tim Roemer of Indiana) will travel from state to state on a "Faith, Family and Values Tour," seeking the votes of religiously committed Americans for the Obama-Biden ticket.

The Obama surrogates assigned to this tour no doubt will try to persuade people of faith that Obama would "reduce abortions." It is important to understand that Obama's recently adopted "abortion reduction" spiel is just a public relations product cooked up at liberal think tanks like Third Way, where veteran pro-abortion activists specialize in developing strategies to help hard-core pro-abortion politicians camouflage their positions.

The real Obama is firmly committed to an agenda of hard-line pro-abortion policies that, if implemented, would greatly increase the numbers of abortions performed.

For example, by conservative estimate, there are more than one million Americans alive today because of the Hyde Amendment, which cut off federal funding for abortion starting in 1976. Even the Alan Guttmacher Institute (linked to Planned Parenthood) and NARAL admit that the Hyde Amendment (and the similar policies adopted by many states) have resulted in many babies being born who otherwise would have been aborted (the pro-abortion groups have put out papers complaining about this). So, the Hyde Amendment is a proven "abortion reduction" policy, big time. Obama, of course, advocates repeal of the Hyde Amendment -- and he also wants to enact a mandatory national health insurance program that would also mandate coverage of abortion on demand.

Moreover, pro-life state laws -- for example, women's right to know laws, waiting periods, and parental notification laws -- are saving countless lives, but Obama is a cosponsor of the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act," which would invalidate every one of these laws. On July 17, 2007, Obama told the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, "The first thing I'd do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That's the first thing that I'd do."

Obama even advocates repeal of the national ban on partial-birth abortions (which the FOCA would also accomplish). And, as documented thoroughly by NRLC, while a member of the Illinois state Senate, Obama led the opposition to legislation to provide protection and care for babies who are born alive during abortions. The documentation on that (with links to primary source) is here:

I have faith that the majority of "people of faith" are not so easily snookered.

  1. He'll say or do anything to get elected. He tries to potray himself as the antiestablishment candidate even though he is a quintessential politician.
I don't even know what he stands for. I've only heard him criticizing his opponent without offering any real solutions of his own. Although, that's what Democrats do best!

Obama also has thousands of press secretaries in the media working on behalf of his campaign. If only the main stream media was fair and balanced maybe then we would have a true picture of the man who wants to be President

Also, for everyone that is obsessed with Sarah because they demand to know more about her I have one question-What do you know about Joe Biden?

  1. Pro-lifers have voted in the president that has killed hundreds of thousands of BORN children. They vote in presidents and senators and congessmen and other pols who believe firmly in the YOYO principles of darwinistic capitalism. They don't mind leaving young moms out there in the wind as long as they get that baby, even if the baby threatens the life of the mother, even if the baby was conceived from a rape or because the (even churchgoing) uncle, or dad, or brother couldn't keep it in his pants.
I got a call once, a young woman was pregnant and had no place to live because rents were too high, because there were no apartments. I called the pastors... YOYO... you're on your own... Bunch of hypocrites the like I have seldom met. parochial, cruel, backwards.

Let me correct you Mr. Johnson. not being pro life is not being pro abortion. That is a transparent rhetorical device you can use on the rubes who have a pathological hatred of learning and who may themselves be the victimes of long incest lines. I am not a pro-lifer and I am opposed to abortion as a rule. But I have spoken to women who were raped and women who felt that they did not have the wherewithal to keep a baby, or where the dad took the next train when he found out that the "piece of tail" had a bun in the oven. Maybe they felt very weak and very lost, especially in such a cruel society as ours. They at least want a choice in the matter. It's their life, their body.

And if you were genuine pro-lifers, you would cease demonizing them and start lobbying so that women can get the support they need, apartments, jobs, etc... We spend nearly a quarter of our budget on making warlike machinery that we then use or sell (we are by far the number one on the planet!) Millions of people are killed annually by devices with Made in the USA written on them. And they have become the bailiwick of the right wing in this country and are whooped up by senators and congressmen and presidents whom pro-lifers support wholeheartedly. Disgusting and shameful.

  1. #2: If you were paying attention you'd know Obama has done a fine job speaking directly to this issue particularly during the Saddleback Church interviews, despite the fact the deck was baldly stacked against him.

Why don't you look into your girl Palin's bizarre Christian beliefs. Come on, don't be afraid...do it!

BTW, your posting name "Martin Luther" would have us believe you are a Lutheran. Your snarky comments are unbecoming a Lutheran. Clean up your act or go to a right wing megachurch.

  1. Both of the previous comments are stupid especially coming from the National Right to Life Committe's legislative director and someone name Martin Luther. When are men going to understand that government has no right what so ever to dictate to any women whether she choices abortion or not. Have any of you looked at the state of foster care today and the fact that movie stars choose to adopt children abroad instead of the United States. Please leave women's bodies alone and let us decide is best for us.

  1. "not only to evangelicals, but also to outreach to Catholics and to Muslims and to Jews."

I guess that about covers it. As a practicing Buddhist, I don't know if I should feel slighted or to be glad ...

  1. Stacie #6,

I am a libertarian and believe a woman has the right to choose -- to a certain point. Our courts have decided that the unborn baby has rights too and that they have a right to life when viable outside the womb. At least that is my current understanding which could certainly be wrong. And it is no longer just men that make these decisions.

So you do not have the right to abort an unborn child under all circumstances. It is another person. Women are not supreme in their rights over other people, even if those people are in their bodies. If you don't like that then don't get pregnant or get an abortion when it is legal and the baby is not viable outside the womb.

Once you have a child it is not the taxpayers job to raise it - it is yours and partner's.

It is time for women and their partners to be strong and take responsibility for their decisions. If you can't afford to have a kid, don't have unprotected sex. If you make a mistake - get an abortion or be prepared to raise it yourself - like most people do. Don't come crawling to your neighbor for money to pay for your kid when they have their own to take care of.

  1. It's sad to the extreme to see how many people view abortion as the first and last issue determining their vote. Rest assured that so long as Republicans control the reins of power in the US, abortion will remain safe and legal. If it were to be outlawed, one quarter of the electorate would stop automatically stop voting automatically Republican and start looking to other issues, discovering that the rest of the Republican agenda is detrimental to them. That's the last thing the Republicans want. So the Republicans rail against abortion, but do nothing to discourage it.

Did you know that McCain wants to pay for his tax cuts for the rich and for corporations and for his program initiatives by taxing employer-provided health care benefits? He hopes to raise $3.2 trillion over ten years with this new tax on the middle class. How many people who now vote solely on the issue of abortion would support McCain and his elitist economic policies if abortion wasn't their to distract them?

  1. Obama is doing many such things "under the radar". At the same time, he is running radio ads up here in NH alleging that McCain/Palin will overturn Roe v. Wade. Which is it, Obama? Some "change".

  1. David,

If you haven't heard any real solutions from Obama, I have a solution for you:

    Q tips

and stop reading all that neo-conservative claptrap (you are obviously repeating it, mindlessly) and switch off those ghastly little attack dogs like Savage.
