Scrubbing Palin's pastors

I have to say that the phenomenon of holding candidates accountable for the controversial remarks of their pastors is a bit mystifying to me -- in most of the churches and synagogues with which I'm most familiar, criticizing the sermon after a worship service is practically a sporting event, and the idea that worshipers might be held accountable for the opinions of their priest, minister or rabbi seems a bit crazy.

But I suppose it's inevitable that, given the controversies over Obama pastor Jeremiah Wright and McCain endorser John Hagee, there are now a lot of people combing through the past remarks of pastors and other speakers at Sarah Palin's multiple churches, looking for anything that might reflect badly on her.

The first to weigh in was Harper's magazine, which, as I noted earlier, didn't turn up anything particularly surprising in its review of on-line sermons at the Juneau Christian Center and the Church on the Rock, two congregations where Palin has worshiped.

But other news organizations have had more luck. Politico reports that Palin was present at the Wasilla Bible Church two weeks ago when the pastor gave a warm welcome to the organization Jews for Jesus, which is viewed with great hostility by the mainstream Jewish community, and when the Jews for Jesus founder described terrorist attacks on Jews as the "judgment of unbelief."

And Mudflats, a blog about Alaskan politics, offers an item headlined, "Sarah Palin's Preacher Problem,'' which quotes Palin saying three months ago, "our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God.” The post quotes Ed Kalnins, the senior pastor of Wasilla Assembly of God, where Palin was a member until 2002, saying "I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say 'war mode.' Now you say, wait a minute Ed, he’s like the good shepherd, he’s loving all the time and he’s kind all the time. Oh yes he is — but I also believe that he had a part of his thoughts that knew that he was in a war."

But even as liberals are apoplectic about the Palin pick, evangelicals are clearly energized. The New York Times today reports on McCain's success turning around his relationship with religious conservatives. An excerpt:

To make up for a history of conflict with the Christian conservative wing of his party, Mr. McCain has in some ways gone further than Mr. Bush to reassure the right of his intentions, even at the risk of spooking more moderate voters. “I am now more confident about a John McCain presidency than I am about a George Bush presidency,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. “The campaign has courted conservatives aggressively, and it has turned around remarkably in just the last few weeks."

Meantime, in the new issue of the New Yorker, Peter Boyer explores the history of outreach by both parties to religious voters. The piece is dated, even before it hits the stands, because of the Palin pick, but still has some interesting reflections from Karl Rove, Douglas Kmiec, and Deal Hudson.

UPDATE: The JTA, a Jewish news service, reports that Abe Foxman, the head of the ADL, is not concerned about the Jews for Jesus appearance at Palin's church. An excerpt:

“If you could tell me that she approves of this guy, she invited him, I’m not aware of any of that...The fact that she belongs to a church that believes in it, I don’t have a problem.”

  1. Pretty pathetic try at ginning up a controversy to negate obama's preacher problems. If that's all you can dig up, you should have saved yourself the embarassment of trying to pass it off as 'objective' reporting.

  1. I'm not happy with the takeover of the Republican Party by the right-wing (supposedly) Christian social conservatives, but I do think the recent practice of holding politicians accountable for the things their pastors say is ridiculous and moronic.

  1. Wow. The Globe is really reaching for any and all chances to smear Governor Palin. Scouring the internet for articles in third-rate community newsletters about Sarah Palin's passive presence at church services in which someone uttered an offensive line five years ago is pretty sad stuff, even for a liberal shill like the Boston Globe.

I find the bitter, sexist vitriol launched against Gov. Palin to be shocking, even by Machiavellian standards of the do-anything-it-takes-to-win Left. I can only hope they get their well-deserved comeuppance this November.

  1. Let's get the facts straight when making comparisons.
McCain didn't sit in Hagee's church for 20 years and have him baptise his children

  1. I was one of those moderates leaning towards McCain, not any longer. Jesus does not run my life and this country reports to the Constitution the last time I checked. If McCain wanted a popular Jesus freak to help preach to the country how to live their lives instead of letting the Constitution rule he could have selected Huckabee Fin. This just proves pure pole pandering and I'm having none of it. We need some Ron Paul to get back to our roots.

  1. "Our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” Mayor Palin says.

Great. We move closer and closer to a state religion - Christain evangelicalism.

  1. I am a member of that "Machiavellian Left" and frankly I don't like the Christian right telling me that my family values aren't as good as theirs. In fact I have been a bit giddy about this new revelation of how Gov. Palin's daughter is no better than Britney Spear's sister. And being a member of the Left Wing I am appalled that people are accepting of 17 year olds getting pregnant. But still life happens and it is no reflection on the governor or her husband. Parents can talk a blue streak about abstinence or contraceptives and kids will do whatever kids want to do. Just as that isn't a reflection on her particular parenting neither is her pastor's remarks a reflection on her beliefs. I have been at Mass where the priest or a guest speaker says something inflammatory that I don't agree with but just because I attended that Mass does not mean I should be held accountable for his thoughts

  1. Would the previous commenters please refer me to the comments they must have posted defending Barack Obama from criticisms stemming from his "passive presence at church services in which someone uttered an offensive line'?

  1. Hey, Hoss: How is it considered a smear, sexist or otherwise, to quote Palin's recent (or for that matter long-past) statements? She is running for national office!

If the Palin quote from the Mudflats blog is accurate: "our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God”, isn't this newsworthy? And isn't this just a little bit disconcerting to those in this country who respect one of the basic tenets of the Constitution (separation of church and state) and who might wish to see their country governed by a person that also respects that principle? Or do you think that religious crusades have a place in governance?

  1. I agree, but why "Scouring the internet for articles in third-rate community newsletters about Sarah Palin's passive presence at church services in which someone uttered an offensive line five years ago is pretty sad stuff, even for a liberal shill like the Boston Globe." when there's youtube-

  1. Gov Palin is a BABE. That's all anyone cares about, but they hide behind rhetoric and pass judgment on her personal matters

  1. All woman should be offended. It is so clear the McCain picked Palin only to gain favor amongst woman. Hillary is clearly more capable.

As far as Dems trying to use the media, excuse me people. All the Republicans tried to do the 8 yrs Clinton was in office was to take him down. They wasted millions of OUR tax dollars on what???

Big deal Clinton was human and he lied about having relations with a female. MMM, Did not Reagan lie ABOUT SELLING ARMS/OR TRADING ARMS. Oh yeah he doesn't remember? And Reagan was a hero, NOT TO ME!

Its about time the Republicans take their medicine. Rush Limbaugh, FOX news and 96.9 talk radio go as far as to call Dems communists, and that is ok, BUT GOD forbid we question the VP pick. Please.

The Boston Globe is one of the best papers in the country. Only those who know a thing or two about writing would know that.

Most republicans are your typical middle aged white man, who never graduated college, drives gas guzzling trucks and has a fat stomachs. Those are the ones who listen to FOX and 96.9 radio and Rush, the idiot, Limbaugh! Funny thing is they are working to make the rich richer, I laugh at them.

Go Obama! This country needs a change and frankly the old middle aged white male, I say I am a christian but dont act like one, am really a racist, but say I have black friends .... your time is nearing an end ... Go Obama!!!!!!

Nice piece Globe. KEEP IT UP!

  1. A curious reflection on "words"

These last few years, we conservatives have been so successful in giving the term "Liberal" a pejorative meaning that those formerly of the "liberal" persuasion have taken to using the term "progressive". OK , fair enough.

Well now, I guess the left wing ( can I use that term ?) has been equally successful in attaching the same stigma to the term "evangelical". What goes around comes around, I guess.

  1. Palin is the worse kind of flip-flopper! Who can trust a woman who changes churches as much as she does!

  1. WHAT DOES ALL THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE SERIOUS ISSUES FACING THIS COUNTRY? CAN WE ALL GET BACK ON TRACK AND CONCENTRATE ON THE FUTURE OF OUR NATION- NO MATTER WHAT YOUR POLITICAL LEANINGS?

  1. Gettiing an endorsement from a kook in TX that you don't really know is very different than sitting in a man's church for 20 years and letting the guy baptize your kids.

Also, these references are fleeting and insignificant.

The Globe looks ridiculous here and the publishers should be ashamed

Posted by truthteller September 3, 08 05:23 PM
  1. "Journalism" like these headlines published by the Globe show why the outlook for the Globe ain't so hottsi-tottsi. The Globe has gone fishing to deeper depths than Sarah's husband. Pretty pathetic. Why is "journalism" even considered a major in college? Is that in the same department as majors like "non-profit" because a lot of democrats seem to major in that, too? Rupert really needs to buy this paper and do some spring cleaning.

  1. As your article mentions, Ms. Palin recently made a speech at the Wasilla Assembly of God. However, no one seems to have noticed that these remarks were addressed to a group a students graduating from a church group called the Master Commission -- if you look at the Master Commission's website it is absolutely scary how they are attempting to attract members with doomsday images straight out of some thriller movie! http://www.mcwasillaalaska.com/

  1. How can anyone even DARE infer that this woman is not the single-best prepared and qualified Republican on the planet to be Sen. McCain’s VP choice? Her resume clearly indicates she’s more than ready to stand a heartbeat away from the oval office and fill in the top spot when it will all-too-likely be required of her. Besides, she’s just like us, right? Who among us doesn’t enjoy shooting the occasional moose from a speeding snowmobile, plunging into an icy river and catching a hurtling Chinook salmon bare-handed, grizzly bear style? Besides, those Obamas don’t share our values and are alarmingly different, even “elitist,” huh?(Code words “secret Muslim”, “angry black woman”, Angela Davis clone and “uppity” may be substituted as needed here.) Anyway, those little Obama girls are way too cute and wholesome looking to be real, don’t you think? What hockey team have they ever played on? And I’m willing to bet you a pound of my best caribou milk mozzarella that THEIR mom has never wrestled a polar bear or even skinned an arctic wolf for that matter. Sarah is the spitting image of every June, Jane or Jean Doe in America!
Let’s hear it for those good old fashioned “family values” and climb on board for one heck of a sleigh ride across the “bridge to nowhere”. In fact I’m so giddy about all this I think I’ll just do the can can all the way to Ketchikan!

  1. Youtube clip was pretty frightening. So we're doing God's work in Iraq - isn't it ironic that the people we're fighting and the people who are fighting each other over there are doing the exact same thing? I am disappointed that I probably won't be invited to end of days party up there. It'll be a rollicking good time I'm sure.

  1. Of course Jews wouldn't be happy with the Jews for Jesus organization, I don't understand at all why there is any thing wrong with Jews for Jesus representatives being the focus of a sermon at a Christian church. This goes on at many Christian churches around the nation, after all Jews for Jesus are Christians who were once Jews! This should'nt even be mentioned in the same breath as Sarah Palin as has been done in the article in the Globe.

  1. I wonder if this isn't all a plan. Pick some clueless neocon separatist to appease the wack job fundies, then dump her overboard for someone reasonable. Can they keep the fundie support after doing that? It seems to me they can if they can spin it as a vast left wing conspiracy.

  1. Republicans don't mind shocking the world for years over a BJ - but will bend over backwards to normalize teen pregnancy. So, do you mind raising your taxes a wee bit or how about taking a tax relief cut on your company - in order to support all of the unwanted children who will be increasing the foster care system _since there will be no more abortion and apparently more 'popular' teen unwed mothers) . And where do you think that money comes from - US!!! The same "welfare" that lines your greedy pockets day in and day out. If the Repubs are in for another four years - the middle class better bend over now and kiss their butts goodbye.

  1. #21

You need to do writing for the party of your choice. That response was absolutely brillant. I was laughing so hard I had tears coming out of my eyes.

This elitist needs to go to Starbucks latte sipping and then go moose hunting in NH. That way I'll be able to identfy with both candidates.

I'll start with the Starbucks tomorrow it's closer and involves less driving.
Anyone know when moose season opens in NH?

  1. It is only natural when candidates hukster for preachers to back them that they be confronted with embarrasments from those preachers who are irresponsible blustering losers.
