Mel Gibson filming across from cathedral

Mel Gibson has been in and around Boston for much of the last three months, shooting his new film, "Edge of Darkness,'' and for the last two Friday nights the film crew has been camped out in front of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, in Boston's South End.
On Friday night, as it happens, I was meeting a friend for dinner at Sage, directly across Washington Street from the cathedral, and we arrived to find the whole block had been commandeered by the filmmakers, who spent the night rehearsing and then filming a shot in which Gibson emerges from Foodies, holding a shopping bag in each hand, and walks a few feet east on Washington, past shops that had been relabeled for the occasion (including a fake lighting store called Shady Business). The scene was kind of complicated because it was supposed to be raining, so a downpour was being generated from a huge raintower, and a small army of extras were functioning as pedestrians and drivers. There was a large film crew, with trucks and tents and headphones and lights, coordinating the shot, and they were using the patio in front of the cathedral as a staging area. A large crowd of onlookers gathered to watch, including your faithful religion correspondent.
Two things piqued my interest, given that this is Mel Gibson, who is associated with an extremely conservative and quasi-schismatic brand of Catholicism, and who in 2006 memorably exploded in a drunken anti-Semitic rage at a police officer two years after making the film, "The Passion of the Christ,'' which had aroused the ire of many in the Jewish community. First, I wondered how the crowd would react to Gibson's presence, and second, I wondered how Gibson was relating to the Archdiocese of Boston, given that he was filming on what is essentially the cardinal's front lawn (Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley lives in the cathedral rectory, but he is managing to miss the action by travelling to Rome).
The crowd reaction appeared to be completely unaffected by Gibson's controversial history, and I'm told that's been the case throughout his time here -- large numbers of people have gathered to see a movie star, period. When the film was first announced, some in the Jewish community were concerned, but the official Jewish community has said nothing about Gibson's presence. There have apparently been two instances in which private property owners have declined to cooperate with the film because of Gibson's participation (Universal Hub has the details on a Roslindale rejection here), but otherwise the reaction has been quiet.
As for the relationship with the official church -- Gibson is one of Hollywood's most prominent Catholics, and his "Passion" film won a lot of praise from conservative Christians, but he has a strained relationship with Rome. His dad is reportedly a Holocaust-denying sedevacantist (those are folks who believe recent popes are all illegitimate), and Mel has built himself his own private parish above Malibu that is unrecognized (in fact, it is not considered Catholic) by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Recently, the New York Post reported that Gibson has apparently spent $42 million on his church, which the paper described as having about 100 members who "follow a 16th-century style of Catholicism, with Mass conducted entirely in Latin and a strict dress code for women.'' Over at Whispers in the Loggia, blogger Rocco Palmo remarked on the strangeness of the situation, saying "In what'll always be one of history's great ironies, the box office from the film most-explicitly promoted in church circles in recent memory... essentially bankrolled schism.''
I asked Terry Donilon, the spokesman for the Archdiocese of Boston, how the archdiocese is relating to Gibson. This is what he said: "The Cardinal did not meet him, nor did the Cathedral folks. His production crew paid a very small fee for use of the property for staging, place to feed the crew, etc. They filmed overnight on the 2 Friday evenings. Gibson has been filming around the state.''

Although he has not been excommunicated, as the open leader of a schismatic sect ("sedevacantist!" (his father) ...wow!), I would think the straightforward characterization of Mr. Gibson as "....[Roman] Catholic" in the article deserves at least a "describes himself as", no?
Gibson has his demons but please give him a break; the man has a right to practise his faith as he sees it. Who cares about his church affiliation? That's his business.
Director Roman Polanski {CHinatown and Rosemary's Baby] raped a 13 year old girl and he didn't receive a tenth of the animosity from the media that Gibson did for his alcoholic rant.
Dan you're wrong there - Polanski had sex with a fifteen(15) year old girl and thus commited 'statutory rape' (law says fifteen year olds cannot have 'consensual ' sex since they- supposedly- aren't mature enough to understand the situation......)--there was no - to my knowledge- any violence involved . Anyway Polanski's actions involved one person -Mel Gibson is teetering on the edge of a Jim Jones style cult !
Polanski's family was destroyed by the Nazi's and he was pilloried by an attention seeking self aggrandizing judge and had to flee the country and he is not an outspoken anti-Semite; Gibson works at will in this country
Wow, 16th century Catholicism? When does the Inquisition begin? Do they burn witches?
Figures an ego case would "build his own church".
Mel Gibson Is a Great Man.
How much can the NYT get for the Globe today?
200 - 300 million?
Horrible people those Christians! Watch out for them. They have very cleverly given up on violence to force you to join their religion and are now resorting to the spoken word to coerce you! They were much more manageable when they threatened you with death like the Islamic nutjobs do.
Drunken rants just reveal true feelings. He's a bigot, pure and simple.
Come to think of it, have they checked his whereabouts a couple nights ago when they had that trouble in Newton?
I have found that most of you idiots from Boston need to get a refund on your education. I look at your posts here and wonder when your common sense took a hike. =D Oh, I'm not a Christian, I am a Christ follower. I'm just not your type of Christian. I don't back down from morons that spread stupidity and hate, I get in your face a back you down. Look into my eyes. This former ARMY Ranger stands and leads in truth. Mr. Mel Gibson is a man that I admire. He keeps going on doing his job making great movies despite your jealous remarks. Don't even bother posting about me, you are out of your league mentally, physically, and spiritually. All posts below this line are worthless! _________________________
In Vino Veritas
He's a very good director, however, I saw some great opportunities that were overlooked by all.
Mel Gibson has a right to work and to worship as he sees fit.
I have a right to ignore him and decline to support his efforts.
You have a right to agree or disagree.
You've got to give to this man...he can at least buy his own church if anyone disagrees with his ideologies unlike Obama supporters whom the Church would like to deny communion. Hey, he is good though...in making movies.
There are some great words in this article: quasi-schismatic and sedevacantist. Mel has had his issues; however, don't most of yell unfortunate things when we've had too much to drink? When I've had 4+ beers, I start shouting in Latin at my kids. And then I start beating myself with one of the spiked chain do-hickies. Like the Opus Dei fellas do.
hI! big brother. Hope your day is going wonderfly! Sincerely,
this is an idiotic blog post.
Michael Paulson finally discovers that Mel is filming in Boston when having dinner, even though he's been in town since summer.
Then he Googles Mel and finds all the celebrity scandal. ....and brings these "issues in his own mind" up as questions, with the answers being, no, noone cares about any of them. Crack reportage.
FInally got a misguided lackey at the RCAB to bite on the sedevacantes rumor. The 16th C Mass he goes to is Celebrated every Sunday at 11 at the Cathedral. Read the sign outside.
OMG or should I say, AMDG and that is what Mel Gibson is all about. For all you ignorant non-Latin believers, AMDG is "For the Greater Honor and Glory of God."
And Mel Gibosn has met with Cathedral goers including those who attend the TLM every Sunday at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. And although O'Malley may or may not have met him, the Mass is still sanctioned by him right under his nose. And, yes, the Mass has literally gone underground, in the basement, at 11:00 A.M. See you there.
I'm sure no one else on earth has ever said anything they didn't really mean when they were drunk---lol. Did we all forget that Mel Gibson is human? Why must we dwell on negative things? Does this sound familiar-why are you so concerned with the speck in your brother's eye when you have a log in your own? Mel has accomplished great things. He has kept his family together, played a major role in freeing a nation, has built a beautiful parish (with his own money), and has, through "The Passion of the Christ", helped restore, renew or strengthen many people's faith.
"Let he without sin cast the first stone" Mel never said he was not a sinner, something he and I shar. We also share in the faith of Christ who also said, " whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven them and whose sins you shall retain they are retined" thank God for the sacrament of Penance for through Christ all things are possible. So be careful of judging for you shall be judged. How many times should we forgive? Seventy times seventy a day. A lesson I have learned from history and I'd like to share with men of good will is when the crowds yell crucify Him, step back, think, then ask WHY? United In Christ.
