'Bless us with anger,' Robinson prays

RobinsonInvocation.jpg

In the invocation offered by Bishop V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire at today's inaugural welcoming ceremony, the openly gay bishop called on God to "bless us with anger – at discrimination, at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants, women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people." Robinson was tapped to give the invocation today after an uproar over President-elect Barack Obama's invitation to evangelical pastor Rick Warren, an opponent of same-sex marriage, to give the invocation during the inauguration Tuesday.

Here is the full text of the prayer, from Robinson's diocesan web site:

"A Prayer for the Nation and Our Next President, Barack Obama
By The Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire

Welcome to Washington! The fun is about to begin, but first, please join me in pausing for a moment, to ask God’s blessing upon our nation and our next president.

O God of our many understandings, we pray that you will…

Bless us with tears – for a world in which over a billion people exist on less than a dollar a day, where young women from many lands are beaten and raped for wanting an education, and thousands die daily from malnutrition, malaria, and AIDS.

Bless us with anger – at discrimination, at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants, women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

Bless us with discomfort – at the easy, simplistic “answers” we’ve preferred to hear from our politicians, instead of the truth, about ourselves and the world, which we need to face if we are going to rise to the challenges of the future.

Bless us with patience – and the knowledge that none of what ails us will be “fixed” anytime soon, and the understanding that our new president is a human being, not a messiah.

Bless us with humility – open to understanding that our own needs must always be balanced with those of the world.

Bless us with freedom from mere tolerance – replacing it with a genuine respect and warm embrace of our differences, and an understanding that in our diversity, we are stronger.

Bless us with compassion and generosity – remembering that every religion’s God judges us by the way we care for the most vulnerable in the human community, whether across town or across the world.

And God, we give you thanks for your child Barack, as he assumes the office of President of the United States.

Give him wisdom beyond his years, and inspire him with Lincoln’s reconciling leadership style, President Kennedy’s ability to enlist our best efforts, and Dr. King’s dream of a nation for ALL the people.

Give him a quiet heart, for our Ship of State needs a steady, calm captain in these times.

Give him stirring words, for we will need to be inspired and motivated to make the personal and common sacrifices necessary to facing the challenges ahead.

Make him color-blind, reminding him of his own words that under his leadership, there will be neither red nor blue states, but the United States.

Help him remember his own oppression as a minority, drawing on that experience of discrimination, that he might seek to change the lives of those who are still its victims.

Give him the strength to find family time and privacy, and help him remember that even though he is president, a father only gets one shot at his daughters’ childhoods.

And please, God, keep him safe. We know we ask too much of our presidents, and we’re asking FAR too much of this one. We know the risk he and his wife are taking for all of us, and we implore you, O good and great God, to keep him safe. Hold him in the palm of your hand – that he might do the work we have called him to do, that he might find joy in this impossible calling, and that in the end, he might lead us as a nation to a place of integrity, prosperity and peace.

AMEN."

UPDATE: Over at Christianity Today, Sarah Pulliam has posted video of the prayer.

  1. Since the prayer was spoken, I think it would be more appropriate to transcribe it, "O god of many understandings..."

Ironically, the microphone was off for all but the last sentence.

Now, will he go back to shrinking the tiny diocese of New Hampshire?

  1. A prayer of historic importance.

Shame on HBO for not including Bishop Robinson's remarks as part of their broadcast.

    Thank you Bishop Robinson.

  1. hmmm I thought I had missed the prayer - now I see that everyone did because it wasn't broadcast.... whose decision was that?
wonderful invocation which pretty much covers all the bases I think are important and admiration for this courageous man who simply is who he is.... no wonder NH elected him

  1. As a priest in the "tiny diocese" of New Hampshire, I can bear witness that in my corner of it at least, it is triumphantly NOT shrinking.

  1. I watched the HBO broadcast specifically because I wanted to hear this.

    Why did HBO censor it?

We are due an explanation. This sounds to me very much like a cowardly act on their part.

  1. I may be wrong, but I don't believe Rev. Robinson was tapped "after an uproar" over Rev. Warren. I believe the invitation was extended prior to any of the religious leaders being announced. Rev. Warren was just announced first. This wasn't a type of pay back or make-up as the article suggests.

  1. So I guess this will become known as THE PRAYER MUFFLED AROUND THE WORLD. Thanks, HBO for nothing. Thanks too to the other networks for not only not showing it, but for totally ignoring it. It would have been less of an insult if he hadn't even been asked to give a prayer.

  1. An incredible prayer. Someone needs to demand that HBO add this (at least the text) to its broadcast. How could they left this off.
Gene Robinson is an amazing man; his prayer was right on!

  1. I would have liked to see and hear this prayer live, but like another comment said, it wasn't on HBO. It's pretty strange, given the historic choice of speaker, that this would not have been covered live by someone. There isn't even anything on YouTube (yet). While I congratulate Robinson on being selected, and for crafting a prayer appropriate for the day, and this president-elect, I do feel that his absence from the broadcast, and (from another comment) the microphone being off, are all too typical of the treatment of gay people who step out of their stereotypical roles.

  1. Beautifully said. Where was HBO. I think I caught a glimpse of the right side of Bishop Robinson for about 3/4 of a second as the camera was panning across the whole ensemble. WAS THE MICROPHONE REALLY TOTALLY OFF????? I have a hard time believing that. Anyone? is that true? After all the brouhaha about this HBO LEAVES IT OUT?????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

  1. Bishop Robinson, Thank you for stirring our hearts with a gladness and urgency that our nation hasn't felt in eight years . . . and thank you for standing strong. I hope that your detractors wil look inward and realize that there is indeed room for tolerance and acceptance of differences in our houses of worship and in our lives.

  1. We have been a bit smug lately. Our country still has much to be ashamed of. And this omission by HBO is a shocking example.

  1. :Bless us with humility – open to understanding that our own needs must always be balanced with those of the world. "

Hmmmm.... it's what the liberal left needs most after believing they can shove everything through that they want without regard for a differing point of view... even which, when spoken in love and compassion, is berated as "phobic" of all sorts...

BTW, the left already has all the anger, they don't need to be "blessed" with any more...

  1. I'm very upset with HBO for not broadcasting the prayer. It was a beautiful prayer prayed by a man who, like Obama, is striving for a more just world.

  1. People in attendance have been posting that they could not hear the prayer. Others report not seeing it on CNN. I am curious if anyone broadcast the prayer.

In addition, the "Brother Ruben and the Official Street Preachers" protested openly-gay Episcopal Gene Robinson's participation in the event. Three protest participants shouted about hate, hell and "homo-sex" - using a megaphone to assert that "homosexuals are eternally damned" and "Jesus doesn't love homosexuals."

  1. A prayer that truly is suited to these times and all of our peoples.

To robroy (comment #1) - It was composed and posted to the NH diocesan website, and published here as written ther. And "God," for believers, gets capitalized. As far as the numbers in Bishop Robinson's home state, the only ones that Jesus cared about were "two or three" being gathered in His Name. Why so snarky?

The silencing of this prayer is shameful - and yes, newsworthy. Someone also said that NPR did not broadcast it, so that is worth following up on.

  1. oh i wish we could have heard him ... i know it is only a moment here at the beginning of this historic inauguration, but all we have are moments all strung together to make up a lifetime...and this was one moment i wanted to be part of, in my small lifetime...because we needed to feel the healing begin here at the beginning, not just for gays or straights, but for the very great divisions that we have in our nation economically, politically, racially and even in our religious institutions....but, like barack has promised, we will get there as a people...and i believe that promise, because i believe he will take us there as a leader.

  1. Way to take on the stereotypes that dog you, Geno. For the poor, abused, impoverished and infirm you hope to offer...tears? That's not even suitable hydration. How about a will to action?

And toward those who discriminate, you pray for...anger? How's that been working out for you? Have you stopped to consider that maybe confronting bigotry with love is the best way to change a heart?

Discomfort? That one came true already. I have a nagging rash on my scalp from scratching my head while I try to decrypt the vaguely whiny entreaty in that prayer. Clergymen have the benefit of rhetorical haze. Those who solve the world's problems, however, find that it's best to break them into actionable components. Keep it simple.

Humility to balance our needs with blah, blah, blah (hnncckkkk....zzzzz). Sorry; all that humility made me sleepy.

BTW--I'm trying to transcend mere tolerance of your whiny wish list, and I'll embrace our differences as soon as you can articulate exactly what makes you different from me.

Patience? I'll need it if we use your approach to the world's problems (tears, anger, hope, and discomfort).

And who put you on a first-name basis with the President? Name dropper.

Nice comment about fatherhood, though. Solid hit.

Otherwise, show a little tolerance yourself and maybe you'll do a bit more to put a loving, big-hearted face to the "minority" of which you have made yourself such an emblem.

  1. comment to 38.--of all of the comments above, including mine at 31., yours is the only one that affirms what gr said he wanted to do, and that was to say things that could be appreciated by everyone...thanks also for pointing out that we probably will see unequal treatment here in the airing of warren's prayer...except it was the obama inaugural team that pulled the plug on airing gr's prayer, not hbo...which makes it even stranger doesn't it? maybe not.

  1. i just wrote to HBO to lambast them for the above-noted omissions/homophobic behavior. i hope the hundreds/thousands who may read this do, too. i also hope that one of these wonderfully new gay advocate/activist groups that have sprung into action as a result of the vicious hatred of the "christian", black, other minority, other supporters of california's proposition will start a boycott of HBO which I, and their multitudes of readers will sign. also, rev al sharpton gave a remarkable speech in atlanta within the past couple of weeks against these so-called "christians" who are silent on every REAL ill confronting america, e.g. poverty, oppression, etc., yet suddenly appear en mass to do their "christian" duty to keep gay people from sharing in the rights that they ALREADY pay taxes for, but are omitted from enjoying. i called his office to offer a thanks from the gay community. his speech was remarkably moving and supportive and real. gays and other supporters of equal rights and haters of hypocrisy might consider contacting his office to do the same.

  1. There is a reason that mainline Episcopal parishes are shrinking nationally and no better example of a reason exists than of Gene Robinson. No matter how much one "slices and dices" what Robinson has come to represent, most that take revealed religion seriously (as opposed to those that reshape it in order for it to fit in better with their political opinions) understand that there it is fundamentally wrong for a person of the cloth to advocate on behalf of sin.

  1. I wonder about the appropriateness of a member of the clergy calling on God to make us angry. Anger places us outside the control of ourselves, and thereby decreases our ability to influence situations of injustice. As Gandhi and Martin Luther King taught, we are most effective when we are inspired by a love for justice, rather than anger at the unjust.

As Bishop Robinson surely knows, Jesus never taught that we should become angry. He did engage in provocative behaviors (such as casting out the moneychangers) in order to point out certain injustices of his day, but I do not believe he experienced anger in the process. And he did not admonish his disciples to "go and do likewise", because, I believe, he knew that most people cannot engage in those kinds of demonstrations without losing emotional control in the process.

Rather, Jesus taught that we should maintain control over ourselves and our circumstances by forgiving seventy times seven—a teaching that has been endorsed by the Dalai Lama, who said we will have attained enlightenment when we can observe a man beating a dog, and feel as much compassion for the man as for the dog.

Remember, that the whole world is not only watching but praying for you and your new President. We need strong leadership, but most of all compassionate leadership. And this prayer prays it all. God bless President Obama and the United States of America.

  1. #43- rather than chastise a loving man who has been torn from limb to limb worldwide for being and standing firm in who he was born to be, then from THAT experience, states that expressions of anger at injustice are appropriate, YOU ought to LEARN from his experience. jesus also teaches us not to judge, but, conveniently, like many who scapegoat gays, you selectively choose to cite teachings that allow you to maintain your superiority AND the unspoken, but inherent inferiority of gay people, including this remarkably courageous, yet loving bishop. very clever move, i'll admit. have YOU been personally vilified by millions? have YOU received a sea of death threats? i'm with gene robinson, NOT you.

  1. Hey EJ, clearly he is not, why aren't you; holding onto so much hatred and likely hiding it behind a veil of sanctity found in the likes of the Pharisees. Jesus warns us about people like you. Apparently some who evoke his name still don't listen to what he has to say, preferring, instead, what the church club tells them to hear. It's too bad that more people who CALL themselves christian are not.
