Anti-abortion group criticizes Caritas

Massachusetts Citizens for Life, apparently not persuaded by Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley's explanation of the proposed arrangement between Caritas Christi Health Care and Centene Corporation, is issuing a statement expressing unhappiness that Caritas officials have not yet responded to a request for a meeting with anti-abortion activists. O'Malley said Caritas would neither provide abortion services nor benefit from them, but the organization is accusing Caritas of being "anti-life" by proposing to join an insurance venture that would cover abortion services provided by non-Catholic hospitals and community centers. The MCFL statement:

"Massachusetts Citizens for Life sent a letter on Thursday to the President and CEO of Caritas Christi, Dr. Ralph de la Torre, requesting a meeting as soon as possible to address the concerns members of the organization have about the Caritas Christi joint venture with Centene Corporation that offers insurance through the Commonwealth Care Health Plan.

Caritas Christi has said it will provide a full range of family planning services. The public has learned that this terminology is code for abortion and abortion-related services. Mass. Citizens sought the meeting to give Caritas Christi the chance to refute these assumptions and to assure the general public that it would not be providing such services.

Since we have not heard from Dr. de la Torre, Mass. Citizens must regretfully assume that, in fact, Caritas Christi would abandon its twenty-three year commitment to protecting the lives of unborn babies and their mothers.

Our members will be contacting the offices of Caritas individually to express their outrage that Caritas would take this anti-life position."

Caritas had no immediate comment; if at some point they do, we'll post that as well.

Here is the text of the letter Mass. Citizens for Life had sent yesterday to Caritas CEO Ralph de la Torre:

"Dear Dr. de la Torre,

Last night the Executive Board of Massachusetts Citizens for Life met because of our concern over the proposed state contract bid by the Centene Corporation/Caritas Christi joint venture to offer insurance in the Commonwealth Care Health Plan.

For the twenty three years Caritas Christi has been in existence, we, and hundreds of thousands of other Massachusetts residents, have had great respect and gratitude for the Caritas Christi hospitals, knowing they were leaders in the Culture of Life, not only offering superb health care but not aborting babies, referring mothers for abortions, or providing abortifacients. Indeed, I am personally very grateful. My husband and I switched out of his MIT Health Plan at cost and hassle so that we could go to Saint Margaret’s instead of Brigham and Women’s because we knew we could trust the neonatologists at St Margaret’s.

At our meeting, all members of the Board expressed concern about your statement that you, “will contract with providers, both in and out of the Caritas network, to ensure access to all services required by the Authority, including confidential family planning services”. In our experience that terminology is code for abortions and abortion-related services.

Massachusetts already has the seventh highest abortion rate in the country. We are very concerned that Caritas Christi may be abandoning its practices supporting all unborn life. This would be a loss not only to the pro-life community, but also to the distinct gifts Caritas brings to the culture here in Massachusetts.

We find it unusual that there has been such a lack of public clarification of your position and no mention of conscience rights for Caritas workers. We, therefore, request a meeting with you at your earliest possible convenience. Since state regulators will be voting on this next Thursday, it is imperative that your position be clarified as soon as possible.

Please call me at or e-mail me at as soon as possible, We look forward to meeting with you about your agreement with Centene, and your proposed role in the Commonwealth Care Program.

Sincerely yours,

Anne Fox
President"

  1. Dear MCFL:

I am as pro-life/anti-abortion as you can be, so i am your ally. Take a little advice from a friend, while you still have any left.

First, you sent your letter to Caritas on Thurs, March 5; what time did you send this press release on March 6? Give them a chance to respond.

Second, in your 2nd paragraph, to which 'it' does your first sentence refer? If it refers to Caritas, it is false. Caritas wll not be offering any so-called family planning, Centene will, as it must by law. What insurance plan or HMO do you belong to? Have you dropped out because they cover abortions for other people? Are you then cooperating in their evil? (no)

Your assumption that Caritas has become anti-life is both groundless and wrong. Groundless, because you assume that because they have not taken time out of their busy day to answer you. Wrong, because both Caritas and Cardinal O'Malley have guaranteed that Caritas will have no involvement with immoral practice.

Finally, you express your "outrage." A little quick for the outrage stage. Sometimes it is this very outrage which becomes the caricature of pro-lifers, which is not a very attractive quality, and can drive neutral, potential pro-lifers into the opposite camp.
But keep up your otherwise good work.

  1. Gaudete,

You seem to be a little confused, which leads me to believe you're in close contact with J Bryan Hehir.

The "guarantee" from O'Malley and Caritas is a flat out deception. The patient who wants the abortion will be discussing it with the Catholic physician who is going to now be forced to approve it, give her a phone number for the abortionist and insurance company.

First, our personal insurance companies are not Catholic. They are not administered by Catholics who are compelled to follow their conscience.

  1. The Cardinal has no right to force everybody at Caritas, who is compelled to follow their conscience into approving the abortion and sending his approval over to the insurance company and sending the woman out of his office with instructions and the phone number.

If the Cardinal wants to materially cooperate, let him drive over to Caritas every day and be the abortion approval specialist. Of course, we all know he wouldn't do that, because he is interested in his soul. He is not interested in anyone elses soul when it comes to money.

  1. Where there is smoke there is usually fire.

Let the directors of Caritas and the Cardinal stand up and be counted on God side. If anyone is going to be offering a pregant women advise of where to obtain an abortion it is wrong. Give her the information of where to obtain supportive help to carry her baby to full term. We have 3 beautiful adopted grandchildren, all children are a gift.

  1. The Cardinal is being intellectually dishonest. He must be talking to Fr. Hehir who I believe is his closest advisor. He is the priest ,who, when he was head of Catholic Charities gave Lesbian and Gay couples children to adopt.I really think it would be better for the Church in Boston if Fr. Hehir went back to Harvard. The Church should have gone to Court to fight for its right to continue helping people adopt children. The Massachusetts Constitution guarantees freedom of Religion and the Catholic Hospitals should go to Court also. Joan Sheridan

  1. This Caritas Christi venture whereby Catholic hospitals would have to cooperate with evil by referring people for abortions is completely disheartening to faithful Catholics who are doing all they can to oppose the killing of the unborn.
It defies logic to say the hospitals wash their hands of it, and yet say the new venture will "offer all family planning services, etc." Both contradictory statements cannot be true.

  1. I think this is typical for most Catholic bishops when it comes to taking a strong stand against the those building the culture of death. While there is a place for dialogue, there is also a time for clear definitive action. That time is now, no more equivocating.

  1. Caritas Christi Health Care Center must protect the unborn.
As Mother Teresa say: "God loves me. I'm not here to just fill a place... He has chosen me for a purpose. I know it. He will fulfill it if I don 't put an obstacle in His way. He will not force me. God could have forced Our Lady. Jesus could have come "just like that."...But God wanted Mary to say yes. It is the same with us. God doesn't force us, but He wants us to say yes.
Please everyone work with everything you have to stop abortion in this state.

  1. I find that, although the Church in Boston speaks of a culture of life in print, I dont hear it in church. So many so called Catholis Politicians vote and express pro- abortion stances but still want all the blessings of the chursh. I say no it is time for this Bishop and the church to say no to them they can not receive communion or be involved with the Church or any other church related group until they come incommunion with church teaching this goes for any politician or hospital that professes to be Catholic

  1. The Archdiocese iof Boston is once again showing lack of leadership and courage. All this does is refer to the back door abortions on demand. Stop listening to the lawyers first and then going to God ....HE should be "consulted" first at all times. Catholic Memorial in New Hampshire I understand is in the midst of the same type of talks. All the hospitals are doing is setting themselves up to take advantagbe of Obama"s Health Plan Stop listening for the buck....or change (which is all we will have left)

  1. For the past three years Massachusetts law has required that abortifacient emergency contraceptive drugs (i.e. the so-called "Morning-after Pill") be made available to rape victims at hospital emergency rooms. Catholic hospitals are not exempt from this law. The Vatican document, "Statement on the So-called 'Morning-after Pill' "says, "the proven 'anti-implantation' action of the morning-after pill is really nothing other than a chemically induced abortion." The statement condemns its use outright.

  1. Abortion is the murder of an unsuspecting precious infant who does his or her
best to take up a defensive position in mom's womb as this "procedure" begins.
I am Catholic. One of the things that means is that I am opposed to abortion.
Why can't the Catholic Church be allowed to be offended or outraged and stand up
for what's right? There are plenty of places to find the facility for an abortion, plenty. Just stand up, bishop, and say not in a Catholic hospital. We'd be here
to stand with you. Our dear Risen Lord would be delighted with you.

  1. Please Cardinal O' Malley & Caritas Christi don't compromise on this one! You need to stand up for life! Why after not performing abortions for so many years start now? I'd rather see the Catholic hospitals lose Fed. funding than compromise on abortion & birth control. Are not Catholic Hospitals supposed to be different? Salt & Light? Doctors should be able to follow their conscience & not have to be forced to perform abortions.

  1. The Catholic Church needs to spend more time and money not trying to help those cells that may become human, but by helping those humans they allowed to be raped by their priests.
