Molotov cocktails singe Brockton church
There was a minor bombing (if there is such a thing) of a Catholic parish in Brockton over the weekend. Globe correspondent Matt Collette talked with Brockton Fire Chief Ken Galligan, who described the damage as minor, but said the explosives could have caused serious damage had they not burned out on their own. There is no indication of a motive -- this could be an act of vandalism, or some kind of hate crime. Here's what Galligan said:
"After the 7:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, someone discovered two Molotov cocktails – described as glass bottles filled with paper towels and a flammable liquid – between a row of pews on the floor of the St. Edith Stein Church (left) in Brockton. What it looks like now is somebody from outside threw these Molotov cocktails through the window onto the wooden floor. The floor was scorched, but the Molotov cocktails apparently burned themselves out."
The church’s co-pastor, the Rev. Brian P. Smith, declined to comment and referred questions to the Archdiocese of Boston. Archdiocesan spokesman Terrence C. Donilon e-mailed a statement:
"Brockton Police and Fire are investigating an incident which occurred this weekend at St. Edith Stein Church. Because of the ongoing investigation we respectfully decline comment at this time. We are grateful that no injuries and no damage was sustained and we pray for those responsible for this unfortunate incident this past weekend."
The Brockton Enterprise has a story with further details on its web site.

"Oh, it was a Catholic Church....Then we don't need to cover it as a News story, just put it under "Articles of Faith. Now, if it was a DIFFERENT reliogion....Ba Boom, Front Page"....Signed the Boston Globe
This is why we need hate crimes laws. Race is the leading reason for hate crimes in the US followed by religion and sexual orientation/expression. Note that there are hate crime laws for race and religion but not for sexual orientation/expression.
Police need to be at schools -churches and public places-not entrapping speeders or directing traffic-it's a jungle out there and people having children are of a weaker moral fiber than ever and failing at their responsibilities of bringing up decent children-so manu crazy- stupid people in this state.
I agree with "Typical" - give this straight-up hate crime the coverage it deserves. Thank God St. Edith Stein Church is still standing!
Funny how the Globe does not consider the attempted burning a Catholic Church newsworthy. If it was a Protastant Church, Mosque, or Jewish place of worship it would be on the front page.
As a minority you see hate crimes even in the court room. So it is the people
who they are. if they are decent they will over look your skin color, if they are not
you are out of luck.
How about a little more 'reporting'!
To determine if it was more than vandalism, perhaps investigating if there were any recent responses (directly or indirectly) to the church's outreach programs...was there any speakers or presentations that could be considered controversial? What are the neighbors reaction to the incident?
Other than molitov cocktails found inside the church that did not fully ignite, there was little relative damage. Those are the facts, not how about some insight?
It seems that if the person used diesel fuel intead of gasoline, this should not be called a Molotov Cocktail, but something more like a Virgin Mary. A substantially non-flammable incendiary bomb raises questions whether the one who tossed it was out to make a statement, was truly incompetent, or both.
Wow a Hate crime against the people who spread Hate, imagine that. While I do not condon hate crimes, I do find it ironic.
I agree with the first post. Why is this piece merely blog material? Why does the blogger feel justified in suggesting the act is either vandalism or terror? It seems to me that the presentation of choice lessens the seriousness of the situation. A bombing isn't merely vandalism. This should have been an important story and demonstrates anti-Catholic religious bias, which I find to be consistent with the Globe.
Thanos73. Just finished looking through the Catechism of the Catholic Church (the ground-rules of the faith) and can't find the section about spreading hate. Is there a section I missed?
I've been a Catholic most of my adult life and have never been told or taught to hate, only to love, even those who I disagree with.
Sounds like you had a bad experience with someone or pay too much attention to the media.
This is a hate crime and it's disgusting that it's not being treated that way. Shame on this hypocritical society!
