Two people suffered life-threatening injuries when they were attacked by a machete-wielding man in Springfield last night, police said.
A Springfield man, Allan Manning, 26, was arrested in the attacks after a foot chase. He faces charges that include assault with intent to commit murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, said Springfield Police Captain Peter Dillon.
Police rushed to break up a fight at Main and Saratoga Streets at about 7:20 p.m. and found six or seven people using bats and sticks as weapons, Dillon said.
They also discovered that one man had been slashed on his throat and a woman had been slashed on her hand, with a machete, leaving them both seriously injured. A third man was stabbed in the back, but his injuries were not life-threatening, Dillon said.
The victims were taken to Bay State Medical Center. Their conditions were not immediately available, Dillon said.
