Somerville police are investigating a shooting outside a residence there this evening.

Captain Paul Upton, a police spokesman, said someone was shot outside 21 Sewell St. just before 6:15 p.m.

The victim was taken to an area hospital, but the victim's identity and condition were not released.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone was at the scene tonight as police searched for shell casings underneath cars on the residential street, which is lined with two- and three-family homes. Police officers could also be seen going in and out of 21 Sewell and neighboring residences.

Patricia Treadwell, 60, a neighborhood resident, said she was watching TV when she heard three loud bangs. At first, she thought someone had set off some firecrackers.

She said there is rarely any violence in the neighborhood.

"If this had happened 14 years ago when I first moved in," Treadwell said, "I would've believed it. But not now."

Treadwell's grandchildren happened to be visiting her from New Hampshire for the night, and were playing outside only hours before the shooting.

"I'm not happy about the fact that they're in and out of the house all the time," she said. "And now I have to worry about drive-bys? I'm not happy about it at all."
