Statement from court system on escaped inmate
This incident is under investigation by the Trial Court Security Department.
Anthony Flye was in New Bedford Superior Court for his arraignment on
March 25, 2008. As two court officers were escorting him from the courtroom to the holding cell, he ran and fell over a railing and was injured. Court officers immediately called an ambulance, and Court Officer David Jackson and a New Bedford police officer escorted the ambulance to the hospital.
Court Officer John Honohan notified the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 12:30 p.m. that Mr. Flye was being transported to St. Luke’s Hospital because of his injury.
While Flye was in the hospital, he requested that his restraints be removed so he could use the bathroom. The court officer complied, and Flye escaped through a second door in the bathroom.
Trial Court Security protocol requires that two court officers accompany any prisoner who is removed to a hospital. It appears that proper protocol was not followed. A full investigation of the reasons for deviation from the protocol and an inquiry into all other aspects of the incident is being conducted.
