Four firefighters were injured today as they battled a five-alarm fire in a mansion on Dane Street in Jamaica Plain.

The blaze broke out just after 3 p.m. Several buildings in the area were evacuated because of the heavy smoke. Firefighters were ordered out of the building because of the heavy fire conditions and are still dousing the building.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital, one with cuts and one with chest pains. Two others were treated at the scene, said Steve MacDonald, a fire department spokesman.

"It's disheartening. But it's a house, not a kid. We will replace the house," said homeowner Will Fulton, who had just gotten home from work.

He said two of his children and a nanny were inside the house. They all made it out.

MacDonald said painters sparked the fire when they were trying to remove paint from a wooden column with a propane torch.
