Police released a sketch of a man who is wanted because he allegedly tried to abduct a 10-year-old girl as she walked home from school Friday in Wilmington.
The light-skinned man has short cropped hair, a mustache, and is between 30 and 40 years old. He was driving an older two-door van that was dark in color and may have had chipping paint, according to Lieutenant Joe Desmond of the Wilmington Police Department.
The girl had been dropped off by her school bus at 3 p.m. at the stop at Kilmarnock and West streets. She was walking home on Kilmarnock Street when the man asked her to “come here” because he had something to show her, Desmond said.
The girl panicked and ran toward her home. The man sped off in the other direction, said her mother.
“She’s a very outgoing child, but she knew there was something wrong and she did the right thing,” said the girl's mother, whom the Globe is not identifying because of safety concerns.
Anyone with information about the man should call the Wilmington Police Department (978) 658-5071.
