A convicted rapist and a Level 3 sex offender who refused to register with the state is back in custody after the State police fugitive squad captured him in Medford Saturday where he had gone to meet his mother.

Michael A. Perry, 38, was convicted of aggravated rape in Middlesex Superior Court in 1993, served time in state prison and was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender in 2005 in Lynn District Court, State police said.

Perry was given a 2.5 year suspended sentence for the Lynn conviction, but has continually failed to register and is scheduled to be returned to the Lynn courthouse where he might be sent back to prison as a probation violator, police said. Perry was one of the State police Most Wanted Sex Offenders until Saturday.

Members of the State police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section learned Perry was to be in the Wellington Circle area Saturday night and were in place around 7 p.m. At that time, Perry’s mother, who was not identified by name, was seen driving into to the Wellington MBTA station where Perry then got into her car.

Before Perry and his mother could drive away, State police surrounded the car with their cruisers, but Perry jumped out of the car and started to run. A trooper released his K9, named Drago, who caught Perry who was then arrested, police said.

Police found identification belonging to two women, one form North Carolina and the other, a Massachusetts RMV identity card. Police said they are investigating the connection between the women to Perry. Perry was treated for a leg laceration at Massachusetts General Hospital before being released to the Essex County sheriff’s department.
