Boston Police bicycle unit members were somewhat amused by the footgear of Jessica Foster who pedaled in from Brookline.

Bands of bikers, escorted by cycling police officers, converged on Boston's City Hall this morning as part of Bike Friday, an event intended to encourage more people in the city to take to their two-wheelers.

The riders gathered before 7 a.m. at six locations before riding in. Bicycle police accompanied most of the groups. The city-sponsored event also included free breakfast and music, courtesy of a local radio station.

Another event is planned for Aug. 22.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino's campaign to make Boston a bike-friendly city has included the installation of new bike lanes and bike racks, the Globe reported in May.
