Quincy man identified as driver in South Shore stolen car and police pursuit crash

A Quincy man was identified today as the person who died following a police chase that began in Hull and ended in Hingham Thursday night.

Jarrod J. Mooney, 25, was behind the wheel of a Buick when it crashed into a minivan on Rockland Street in Hingham, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office said today in a statement. Mooney was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the minivan, a Hingham woman whose name was not released, is hospitalized with injuries that were not life threatening, Plymouth prosecutors said.

The crash, and the role of the Hull and Hingham police departments in it, remains under investigation by Cruz’s office. A district attorney's spokeswoman said Hull police were not actively pursuing Mooney at the time of the crash.

The chain of events did begin in Hull, prosecutors said, when the Buick smashed into a car and then sped off. Hull police pursued it for about a mile on George Washington Boulevard, but the speeding vehicle drove off into neighboring Hingham.

On Rockland Street, Mooney and the Buick crossed into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes and collided with the minivan, prosecutors said.

The car that Mooney was driving had been reported stolen in Quincy, prosecutors said. Mooney’s most recent home address is Washington Street in Quincy, officials said.
