A man was killed this morning on Interstate 495 in Chelmsford when his car collided head-on with a tractor-trailer that had careened out of control and was traveling on the wrong side of the highway, State Police said.
Police said the operator of a 2000 Dodge Intrepid traveling northbound lost control of her vehicle at about 10:05 a.m. and collided with a tractor-trailer in another lane. The tractor-trailer lost control, went through the median, and entered the southbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a Chevy Silverado pickup truck driven by Charles Butzer, 67, of Sanford, N.C.
Butzer was seriously injured and declared dead at the scene, State Police said in a statement. His identity was being withheld pending notification of his family.
The operator of the tractor-trailer, Jody Anderson, 46, of Millville, N.J., received minor injuries. The operator of the Intrepid, Kaitlyn Driscoll, 22, of Fitchburg, was not injured.
Police said the crash was under investigation. Because of the investigation, all of the southbound lanes were closed for about 2 1/2 hours.
