The Fairmount commuter line is shut down this afternoon because a train rolled off the tracks Thursday night just outside of South Station.

Normal service is not expected to resume until Monday, said MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo.

Two bi-level coaches derailed at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday at a switch about a quarter-mile south of South Station as a crew took the train to a rail yard, said MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo.

Both coaches have been placed back on the rails, and crews from Amtrak, which maintains the track in that area, are working to repair the badly damaged switch, he said.

Pesaturo said this afternoon that Amtrak had told his agency that repairs were taking longer than anticipated. Pesaturo said trains are sporadically being sent down the line, but it's not something commuters can rely on.

Repairs will be completed tomorrow, but since the line does not run on the weekends, officials are looking at a resumption of service on the line Monday, he said.

MBTA officials urged customers to use MBTA buses that serve stations along the Fairmount Line.
