The National Weather Service says it may be hot and humid today in the Bay State, but Saturday will be even more of a scorcher.

Temperatures in some areas are expected to rise today to the low 90s. By mid-afternoon, the temperature had climbed to 90 degrees at Logan International Airport.

An air quality alert has been issued from 2 to 10 p.m. today because ozone or fine particulate levels are expected to rise into the unhealthy zone.

Thunderstorms are also expected this afternoon. The weather has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for central Berkshire County and adjoining areas of New York State.

The greatest risk today from the storms, which could include strong to damaging winds, appears to be both along and north of the Massachusetts Turnpike, forecasters said.

On Saturday, the temperature is expected to climb higher -- into the mid-90s -- and the humidity is expected to remain high.

Unhealthy air is expected again. And so are afternoon thunderstorms.
