A man is in jail after attempting to rob a Cape Cod convenience store with a fake hand grenade, Harwich police said.

Dennis Walsh of Harwich has been charged with armed robbery while masked, subsequent offense; assault to rob while armed; and assault with a dangerous weapon, police said in a statement.

Witnesses told police that Walsh walked into a White Hen Pantry armed with what appeared to be a grenade. He allegedly demanded money from the cash register and threatened to detonate the grenade. Walsh also attempted to pull the pin of the device, but fumbled with it and was scared off by one of the store’s employees, police said.

As he attempted to flee, Walsh was apprehended by three witnesses outside and arrested by police. The grenade turned out to be a metal replica. Walsh is being held in lieu of $8,000 cash bail.
