A man is in the hospital after he was stabbed early Sunday morning at the annual Mashpee Wampanoag tribal gathering, Mashpee Police said.
The man was attempting to break up a fight between two other men when he was stabbed on his right side from behind, said Police Chief Rodney Collins. The fight took place at about 4 a.m. in the woods behind the tribal council building on Great Neck Road South, Collins said.
The man was initially admitted to the hospital with serious wounds, but Collins said this afternoon that he didn't know the man’s current condition. Collins would not release the man's name or say whether the man was a member of the tribe.
A call to the phone number for the Mashpee Wampanoag office couldn't be connected today.
Collins said that officers reported that there were 20 to 30 people in the area at the time of the stabbing, but details remained unclear. He said police were initially met with hostility when they arrived on the scene.
Police are investigating, but no arrests have been made. Collins requested that anyone with information contact Detective Robert Waterfield at the department.
