A 140-foot Coast Guard cutter collided with a Block Island ferry this afternoon. No injuries have been reported and neither vessel is taking on water, according to a Coast Guard spokeswoman.
Cutter Morro Bay collided with the ferry at 12:15 p.m. about 3 miles north of Block Island. It is unclear what caused the collision, which is under investigation, said Petty Officer Lauren Jorgensen.
There was a 14-knot wind and calm seas at the time of the crash. Information about visibility and fog was not immediately available, Jorgensen said.
The ferry continued on its route to Block Island under the escort of the Coast Guard Cutter Tiger Shark. A 47-foot lifeboat also rushed to the scene as a precaution.
