One dead, one wounded in Boston shootings

Only hours after police and city officials announced dozens of arrests intended to calm Boston's streets, two people were shot, one fatally, early this morning.
Police responded at about 2:20 a.m. to reports of a person shot on Whittier Street in the city's Roxbury neighborhood. They found a male victim who later died at Boston Medical Center, police said. His name wasn't immediately released. It was Boston's 34th homicide of the year, down from 36 at this point last year.
Then, at about 3:40 a.m., police were called to Carney Hospital where a male gunshot victim had walked in to the emergency room. The victim told police he was shot at the intersection of Morton Street and Blue Hill Avenue in the city's Dorchester neighborhood. Police said his injuries were non-life-threatening. Police are unsure if the shootings are related and said they were investigating.
Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis and Mayor Thomas M. Menino said yesterday that 50 gang members and drug dealers had been arrested in a sweep targeting some of Boston's toughest neighborhoods. Menino said the arrests sent a message that "gang-related and violent activity is not acceptable."
