Two women were killed and a third woman was seriously injured tonight when the car they were in crashed head-on into a tree off of southbound Route 1 in Wrentham, State Police said.

The driver and the front seat passenger, who police described as adult females, were pronounced dead at the scene, near Myrtle Street, about three miles from Gillette Stadium, police said.

The third woman in the car suffered serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, police said. Her condition was not known.

The identities of the victims were not immediately released.

State Police said the driver lost control of her 2007 Pontiac G5, left the road to the right and crashed about 6:56 p.m. Trooper Eric Benson said in a telephone interview tonight that speed was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. It was not clear if the victims of the crash, which police said forced the temporary closure of the right travel lane, were wearing seat belts.
