That insect whining around your ears may be annoying -- and dangerous to your health. State public health officials are warning people to take precautions after the discovery of mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus for the first time this year.

The mosquitoes were found Friday in a pool in Worcester.

"The recent rains and hot weather have increased mosquito populations. Now it is most important to take action to help reduce mosquito populations around your home and neighborhood and to make personal precautions a habit," said Al DeMaria, the epidemiologist for the Department of Public Health.

There were six human cases of West Nile virus in the state last year, including two in Worcester. The disease can infect people of all ages, but those over 50 are at higher risk for severe cases, officials said.

The officials suggested that people consider rescheduling evening and early morning activities; wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and socks; apply insect repellent; drain any standing water near your house; and install or repair screens. They also asked that people report dead crows, bluejays, or robins because they may be a sign that the virus is circulating among birds in the area.
