A piece of timber supporting electrical wiring began to smolder this morning in the Government Center MBTA station, generating heavy smoke and disrupting service for an hour and a half.

Subway riders were evacuated, but no injuries were reported, a T spokesman said.

Heavy smoke was reported at about 9:40 a.m. and service was restored by 11:15 a.m., said Joe Pesaturo.
