A 26-year-old Lowell man has been convicted of assaulting his 22-month-old son in November, Middlesex County prosecutors said.
Ty Chan pleaded guilty today in Lowell Superior Court to a charge of assault and battery on a child causing serious bodily injury, District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr.’s office said in a statement.
Judge Paul Chernoff sentenced Chan to 2 1/2 years in jail and five years of probation. Chan will have to serve 18 months of that term, said district attorney's spokeswoman Jessica Venezia.
Prosecutors said Chan bit the toddler’s lip in the Nov. 17 incident, Venezia said. He later admitted to police he had taken ecstasy and cocaine prior to the incident.
“Today’s plea of guilty holds Ty Chan accountable for the disturbing, troubling, and violent acts of abuse against his own child," Leone said. “Children are our most vulnerable victims and we proudly speak for them and fight for justice on their behalf.”
