A man with apparent stab wounds was found dead this morning near a jungle gym in a well-kept Dorchester park, police said.

The man was discovered lying on a bench with what appeared to be stab wounds, said police Deputy Superintendent Daniel P. Linskey. He was found in Adams/Kings Street Park, a wooded lot with new playground equipment and a field hockey court.

The man, who may have been homeless, was pronounced dead at the scene, Linskey said. His death is under investigation.

The crime occurred in a quiet corner of Dorchester with well-tended homes that is not known for violent crime. The park had been a vacant lot until a decade ago, when residents helped transform it into a playground. Now the jungle gym stays busy with young children, residents play on permanent chess tables, and Mayor Thomas M. Menino attends an annual tree lighting every December.

The discovery of the man's body rattled the neighborhood.

"This is the exception, not the norm," said Craig Galvin, 38, a lifelong resident.
"This is a very, very, very nice place to live."
