Vandals at Plimoth Plantation struck several replica houses, damaged fencing, and stole beaver pelts and furs during a late-night raid Friday, police said today.

The invaders, described as a group of kids, slipped unnoticed into the colonial village and broke bolt locks on eight houses, said Captain Michael Botieri of the Plymouth Police Department. They proceeded to smash pottery, break fences, and steal antique hammers and replica tools, Botieri said.

A Plantation employee noticed the damage Saturday morning and reported it to police, he said. Workers immediately picked up at the vandalized homes to prepare for the day’s tours. The cleaning did not have an adverse impact on evidence and would not hurt the investigation.

“We understand what they did, we documented everything, and we got a good record of what happened,” Botieri said.

A detective has been assigned to the case and the investigation continues, he said. An on-duty security guard did not notice any disturbances the night of the raid, and there was no taped surveillance of the area. Police have no damage estimate.

A representative of Plimouth Plantation could not be reached today for comment.
